How to have safe bathing fun
Swimming and diving with a cochlear implant is now perfectly possible, provided the technology is properly protected. Whether in a pool, lake, or ocean: with the right accessories and a little preparation, nothing stands in the way of fun swimming or even scuba diving.
Water protection for audio processors
For many people, swimming is a part of summer. To ensure that people with cochlear implants can safely enter the water, the protection of the audio processor is crucial. The IP (Ingress Protection) rating indicates how waterproof a device is. This indicates how well it is protected against the ingress of water and dust.
Swimming with a cochlear implant: What should you pay attention to?
Earlier audio processor models were only splash-proof (e.g., IP32 or IPx4). Modern audio processors like the SONNET 3 from MED-EL, however, have an IP68 certification, making them dustproof and waterproof. Showering, swimming, or even brief submersion are possible with proper handling.
Important: The device must be intact, properly sealed, and free of cracks. For added protection, use waterproof protective cases specifically designed for CI processors. They are available for every audio processor model and protect against chlorine, salt, and fresh water.
Increase safety in water sports
Especially when swimming in open water, it's a good idea to secure the audio processor with a clip or strap to prevent it from getting lost. Since loss in the water can never be completely ruled out, insurance for the device is recommended.
Diving with a cochlear implant: What is possible?
Diving with a cochlear implant is also possible. For this, the audio processor must be removed, even with IP68 certification. The actual implant beneath the skin is pressure-resistant and can easily withstand diving. The depth of diving permitted depends on the type of implant.
MED-EL hearing implants are approved for depths of up to 50 meters – this comfortably covers the recommended recreational diving limit of 40 meters.
If you are unsure, contact the manufacturer or your CI technician to clarify any questions and be on the safe side.
