Lisa M.

"The idea of never hearing a bird chirp again was unthinkable."

My name is Lisa, I live in Vienna and I have cochlear implants on both sides. I was born with normal hearing, but I suffered hearing loss as a teenager, which was diagnosed when I was 16 and fitted with hearing aids in both ears. Despite this, my hearing got steadily worse. I was referred to the General Hospital, where I was eventually diagnosed with complete deafness. The CI was my only option, so I had a left-sided implant in 2011 and a right-sided implant in 2014.

In my youth I was ashamed of my CIs, but I have learned to be open about them and today I am doing very well with them! Learning to hear again was exhausting and time-consuming, but worth every effort. Today I can hear as well as I did as a child. I am happy to be able to participate in normal social life and that everything sounds right again. My favorite sounds are waves, rain and birdsong.

My most important tip

My most important tip is to challenge and train yourself, but also to be patient and know your own limits. You should also be open and, above all, communicate your needs confidently. Talking to like-minded people can help a lot.
