About the causes and consequences of sudden hearing loss
If a sudden hearing loss occurs without a recognizable cause, usually on one side, then it is necessary to react quickly.
A sudden hearing loss therefore occurs without warning and within seconds or minutes. The perception of sound is disturbed. The resulting hearing loss can range from very mild to profound. It may affect all frequencies or just limited frequency range.
The course of sudden hearing loss varies greatly from person to person. It can disappear spontaneously, be peripheral or permanent. Accompanying symptoms may include tinnitus or dizziness. Despite the fact that there is still insufficient medical knowledge, it is important to consult an ENT expert as soon as possible. This is because the chances of recovery are greatest if action is taken as quickly as possible.
The specialist must first rule out other illnesses such as middle ear infection, acoustic trauma, etc. If there is no obvious reason for the hearing loss, the specialist will diagnose a sudden hearing loss.
There are still only theoretical explanations for the causes: they range from circulatory disorders, diabetes, metabolic disorders to high cholesterol levels. Stress can also be a trigger, according to the affected patients.
These treatment methods are commonly used, depending on the suspected cause:
- Cortisone administration - to combat swelling and inflammation in the inner ear
- Infusions - to improve the blood flow
- Relaxation exercises
- Behavioral or psychotherapy
If the consequences of a sudden hearing loss are permanent and even result in severe hearing loss, cochlear implantation is an option. You can find out more about this here
