"I speak four foreign languages and of course it's much easier with CI!"
My name is Silvia and I have a cochlear implant on one side. As a child, I often struggled with middle ear infections and also suffered a sudden hearing loss twice. After many operations and several unsuccessful attempts with conventional hearing aids, my hearing was finally so bad that nothing could help. I changed my ENT doctor, who was now the first to draw my attention to cochlear implants. After examinations at Linz General Hospital, it was clear that implantation was possible. That was a great relief! Although I had a lot of questions about the operation, there was never any question as to whether I would have an implant.
My life with a cochlear implant has become much easier. I can hear when someone is speaking behind me. I can also learn languages more easily, which is very helpful because I love traveling. I love the sea and I love hearing the sound of the waves.
My most important tip
Patience. After implantation, hearing is not perfect straight away, but with a lot of practice it gets better and better. Practicing should also be fun and not overwhelming. If you do experience setbacks or stagnation, you should never be discouraged.
