Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world - but what about the risks for cochlear implant (CI) users? The implants give those affected a new quality of life. But in sports with a high risk of injury, such as soccer, the question arises: Can the cochlear implant be damaged? Here you will find the most important points that CI users should consider in order to play soccer safely and enjoyably.

Soccer and cochlear implants: Risk or no problem?

Soccer requires speed, coordination and occasionally physical exertion - which is exactly what makes the sport so exciting for many people. For users of a cochlear implant, however, the question arises as to whether the constant movements and possible collisions could pose a risk to their implant. The implant, which is surgically anchored in the inner ear, is a technologically advanced device. Its outer component sits behind the ear and is connected by a magnet so that the device normally remains securely in place even during sporting activities.

Even though cochlear implants are very robust, a strong blow to the head, for example from the ball or another player, can jeopardize the functionality of the audio processor and the implant. The following therefore applies: Football is possible in principle for CI wearers, but there is a residual risk.

How CI users can play soccer safely

For all those who would like to play soccer despite the possible risks, there are some safety precautions that help to minimize the risk:

  • Protective clothing: A specially made headband or a padded protective cap can provide additional protection for the head and the cochlear implant system.
  • Avoiding headers: The risk of severe concussions can be significantly reduced by consciously avoiding headers.
  • Arrangements with the team: If teammates are informed about the cochlear implant, they can be more considerate and play more carefully.

Playing soccer with a cochlear implant - a question of caution

Although soccer is not strictly forbidden for CI users, caution must be exercised. A cochlear implant is a valuable technology that significantly improves the lives of those affected, but it is also sensitive. Through caution, protective measures and open communication within the team, CI users can minimize the risk and enjoy the sport safely.
